The Interred Cities

The Ashfield Reaches contain complete civilizations that sank — slowly, over centuries — into the sand without being destroyed. Buildings intact. Streets navigable. The people who built them are gone. Their libraries remain, which is why the Scholar-Warrior Clans settled here and never left.

Giant ruins underlie the deepest excavation sites — structures so large that the Interred Cities were built on top of them without their builders realizing. The deepest excavations reach structures that predate human civilization on the continent.

The Sand Archives

The Sand Archives contain pre-primordial texts that no other region has access to. Several governments have tried to negotiate access. None have succeeded. The Scholar-Warrior Clans' knowledge-lineage governance means they fight to protect what they know — not as soldiers who happen to be scholars, but as scholars who understand that fighting is sometimes what knowledge requires.

Djinn territorial presence in the deep desert is acknowledged but not governed. They follow their own ancient agreements, which predate the Scholar-Warrior Clans' arrival by an indeterminate period and have never been written down.

Stein & The Fracture Texts

Stein's research base is located in the Reaches. The cache of Fracture texts that reactivated the organization as an active threat was found here — Second Age documents recovered from the sand that gave the Fracture the historical context for what the containment lattice is and where its anchor points are concentrated.

The Vault's walls in the Obsidian Crown's Undercity contain script that Stein recognizes in fragments from texts he found here. The connection between the Ashfield documents and the Sovereign Period is the clearest thread the current investigation has — and it is a thread Stein has been following alone.
